FAQs

  • People need IDs for almost everything. People need IDs for employment, housing, public benefits, enrolling in school, banking, and most recently, to vote.

  • There are many obstacles to getting an ID. First, it comes with a price tag. It’s important not to take that for granted. Additionally, people often need a birth certificate to prove their identity and lawful status. Not everyone is able to keep those documents in safe and secure place, especially if they are experiencing housing instability or poverty. The same is true for a social security number. And if those documents are lost, guess what you need in order to get replacements. A photo ID! So long story short, it’s complicated.

  • A nondriver ID that lasts for 6 years costs $18. But if you need your birth certificate it will cost more. A Missouri birth certificate costs $15. Other states vary. Check our “Get Help” page to find ID Assistance near you.
